Observers across the world are monitoring as Germany cautiously reopens its stores amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Companies are interested to gauge how German consumers react as more shops are open and available. The retailers reopening in Germany include global chains H&M, Adidas, IKEA, and Puma. The stores have had to reckon with a number of health and safety considerations, including how to ensure that consumers remain appropriately distanced from one another and how to keep communal spaces like changing rooms clean.

Retailers are also questioning how best to keep workers safe and surfaces disinfected as shoppers return to brick-and-mortar stores. Germany last week allowed retailers of up to 8,600 square feet to reopen provided they continue adhering to social distancing and hygiene rules.

Under the rules, the number of people permitted in shops at any one time has been limited. While shopping turnout is markedly less than the normal numbers at this time of year, there are encouraging signs for retailers, including the opinion expressed publicly by some shoppers that more stores should reopen. Athletic apparel, including running and training gear, has been popular in the early days of Germany’s reopening.
