WHO warns on supply disruptions in coronavirus crisis, seeks more ...

The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking greater flight capacity so that it can ship more diagnostic tests and personal protective equipment (PPE) to Latin America and other areas where COVID-19 is spreading.

The Geneva-based body has already acquired and distributed 1.1 million diagnostic tests but has another 1.5 million that need to be delivered. “We saw the international air transport system on which we are quite dependent for movement of cargo gradually shut down,” explained Paul Molinaro, chief of WHO operations support and logistics.

“On commercial aircraft…we appeal constantly for more offers of assets, or extremely discounted air cargo.” Panama will serve as a hub for regional distribution of PPE and other supplies to Latin America, he added.
