Uncertainty over the health of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has outside interests worrying over who would assume control should he become critically ill or die.
Kim is the third generation of his family to rule the country, a dynastic reign that has lasted seven decades. The family’s mythical “Paektu” bloodline dictates that only direct family members may lead the nation, making Kim Yo Jong — Kim’s younger sister — the logical choice to succeed him.
However, given North Korea’s highly patriarchal values, observers say it is also possible that Kim Yo Jong might be pushed aside in favor of Kim Pyong Il, the half-brother of Kim Jong Il, or even a collective leadership headed by a non-relative.
