Despite a nationwide lockdown since March 17, police in Paris continue to deal with pockets of unrest on the outskirts of the city.
Nine people in two different suburbs were arrested overnight Tuesday, after fireworks were set off and a number of vehicles and garbage cans were lit on fire. While less contentious that previous outbreaks of violence, this week’s spike in activity underscores the challenges in policing neighborhoods that were hot spots even before stay-at-home orders were put in place.
Not only are families crammed together in tight living spaces in the poorer suburbs with nowhere to go, police patrols to enforce the lockdown have interrupted drug-dealing and other criminal enterprises.
