Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) made “dangerous and provocative” overtures toward American vessels in international waters, the Pentagon reported Wednesday.
Six Coast Guard and Navy ships were conducting training operations in the North Arabian Gulf when 11 Iranian ships apparently crossed their bows and sterns at unsafe range and speed. The activity continued for about an hour before the IRGCN vessels finally heeded warnings from the U.S. crews to back off.
The incident is just the latest show of antagonism between Iran and the United States since a top Iranian general was killed in a U.S. strike on Jan. 2. President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from an Obama-era nuclear deal, which had lifted sanctions on Iran, is also feeding the breakdown in relations between Washington and Tehran.
